Franklin immigrated with his parents and siblings to the United States. arriving Sept 24, 1841. The family settled in Miami County, Ohio for about nine years and then later moved to Floyd County, Indiana.

At the age of twenty-one, Franklin married his first wife; Laura Linder on October 10, 1859 in Floyd Co,Indiana. Together they had three daughters and two sons. Laura preceded him in death in 1886. Franklin earned his living as a broom maker, working with his brother Andrew.

Franklin married his second wife; Ida Amelia Rupert around 1888. He was fifty years old when they married. Together they had seven children and continued to live in Springfield, Indiana until moving to Ohio around 1909, where he took up farming as a living. Franklin lived out his remaining days in Ohio and died at the age of eighty one.
