Gene Max Whatley, 80, native of Whatley, died at his Nashville, TN residence on Nov. 6, 2009.
He was born on Nov. 23, 1929. He graduated from Clarke County High School in 1948 having been a member of Sue Haskew's first grade, her first year (1936) at teaching school.
He joined the U. S. Army and served in Korea during the war there. After that conflict, he was married to the former Donna Sue Chapman, who survives him. They have one son, James Foster, also surviving.
Soon after marriage in 1952, the young couple moved into the house they occupied for the next 57 years. Sometime after discharge from the Army, Gene Max joined the Air Force Reserves and later retired from the military service.
His working career was spent with the U. S. Postal Service in Nashville as a local mail carrier.
Survivors include three brothers and two sisters: Rev. Ray E. Whatley, Ashville; William D. Whatley, Atlanta, GA; George (Dick) Whatley, Pell City; Elizabeth W. Sadler, Gulf Breeze, FL, Shirley W. Burge, Grove Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was Nov. 9 with Dr. Barry R. Sadler Sr. officiating.
Assisting him were Rev. Dr. Eddie L. Wren Jr., the Rev. Gary L. Whatley and William D. Whatley. Burial was in the "Field of Honor" section of the Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashville.
Active pallbearers were David C. Whatley, Gary L. Whatley, Gene B. Pritchett, Curtis Greer, Lucius Tally and John Ray. Honorary pallbearers were James Lantrip Jr. and Granville Chapman
