Professional Football Player. For nine seasons (1976 to 1984), he played at the running back (fullback) position in the National Football League with the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers. Born Harry Vance Muncie, he attended Uniontown High School and Arizona Western College, prior to transferring to the University of California where he played collegiate football. During his years with the Bears, he set several school records while contributing to Cal's sharing of the Pac-8 Championship in 1975. Additionally during that year, he earned the cover of Sports Illustrated while finishing runner-up to Archie Griffin in the Heisman Trophy voting. Selected by the Saints during the 1st-round (3rd overall pick) of the 1976 NFL Draft, he appeared in 110 regular season games and totaled 6,702 rushing yards with 71 rushing touchdowns. Muncie earned Pro-Bowl honors three-times (1979, 1981 and 1982) and topped the 1,000 yard rushing mark with 1,198 in 1979 and 1,144 in 1981. He led the NFL with 19 rushing touchdowns in 1981. He suffered personal turmoil after his football career ended, as he struggled with substance addiction. This led to prison time as he served 19 months for drug distribution in 1989. He was able to turn his life around and went onto serve as a counselor to people whom also struggled with dependency. He died from a heart attack. (bio by: C.S.)
