Dorsey Pender
Original name: William Pender
Birth: Feb. 6, 1834
Edgecombe County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Jul. 18, 1863
Staunton City
Virginia, USA

Civil War Confederate Major General. Born William Dorsey Pender in Edgecomb County, North Carolina, he graduated from West Point in 1854, was commissioned an officer in the US Infantry and served in the West Coast. With the start of the Civil War, he resigned from the US Army and was commissioned a Colonel in the Confederate 13th North Carolina Infantry. After his performance at Seven Pines, he was promoted Brigadier General, led his brigade at the Seven Days battle and at Chancellorsville. Promoted Major General in June 1863, he was placed in command of a division in the 3rd Corps under General A.P. Hill at Gettysburg. On July 2, 1863, in a follow-up attack on Seminary Hill, Pender received a shrapnel wound in the leg. The leg became infected as he was being transported to Staunton, Virginia, which resulted in being amputated there, and he died subsequent to the operation, on July 18, 1863. At the time of his death, he was widely considered one of the outstanding younger generals in the Confederate Army. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
