Enlisted on 5/25/1861, he was mustered into Company D, 4th Virginia Cavalry as a Private.
Listed as Absent, Detailed with Capt. Lay on July & August 1861 Roll.
Promoted to 2nd Corpl 9/1/1861.
Listed as Absent, Sick on Sept & Oct and Nov & Dec 1861 Rolls.
Furloughed 2/15/1862 for 12 days.
Promoted to Sergeant 10/31/1862.
Wounded 10/9/1864 Fisher's Hill, VA.

The 4th Cavalry Regiment, "Escorts to Gen. Stonewall Jackson", completed its organization at Sangster's Cross Roads, Prince William County, Virginia, in September, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Prince William, Chesterfield, Madison, Culpeper, Powhatan, Goochland, Hanover, Fauquier, Buckingham, and the City of Richmond.
It participated in the Battle of Williamsburg, the Seven Days' Battles, 2nd Manassas, Maryland campaigns, Fredericksburg, Kelly's Ford, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Upperville, Gettysburg, Bristoe, Mine Run, The Wilderness, Todd's Tavern, Spotsylvania, Haw's Shop, Bethesda Church, the Shenandoah Valley with Early and around Appomattox.

Mr. John Ball, a well-known citizen of Fauquier county, died at the home of his son, M.L. Ball, near Marshall, last week, and his remains were interred in the cemetery in Manassas on Saturday.
Mr. Ball was formerly a resident of this county, having lived at Milford Mills for a number of years. He was an old Confederate soldier and was venerated and respected by all who knew him.
