Peter Akers was born in Campbell County, Virginia on September 1, 1790 to John Akers (b. 9-August-1763, Campbell County, VA) and Agnes Bryan Akers (b. Rockbridge County, VA). He began his career as a lawyer, but from her deathbed, his first wife pled with him to spend the remainder of his life serving God. He honored her wish and sacrificed his legal career and eventually became a Circuit Rider Preacher throughout the Midwest. Beginning in Kentucky he traveled north to Morgan County, Illinois and began what was known as Ebenezer Church, which served the Ebenezer community from 1835-1994 when the church burnt. Dr. Akers was instrumental in the faith of many Believers.
Peter Akers married Ann Goheen on May 12, 1846 in St. Clair County, Illinois after the death of Elizabeth Reid Akers.
Peters siblings were Mary Akers, William Akers, Elizabeth (Jane) Akers, Agnes Akers, John Akers, Bryan Akers and George Akers.
