Martha Eleanor (DeLong) Hawk was the second of nine children born in Cattaraugus County, New York to Sarah 'Sally' Ann (Armstrong) and Francis DeLong.

She married William John Hawk in 1844 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and from this marriage were born 11 children: William Andrew, Sarah M., John Quincy, Mary Lodema, Rose Ella, Eli W., Leonard C.F., George Lincoln, Lydia L. J., Sheridan Hiram and Elmer Ellsworth, all born in the Mercer County area. Both Leonard and Lydia died before the age of one, and Elmer Ellsworth died at the age of three.

William and she spent the rest of their lives in Mercer County.

She is thought to have been buried in Old Findley Cemetery in Mercer County, PA, but no gravesite has yet been found.
