Joy Sterling Johnson, 86, of St. Anthony, Idaho, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at his home. He was born April 20, 1927, in Archer, Idaho, to Carl and Geraldine Johnson. Joy attended schools in Archer and Rexburg. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines in 1944. He served in the Philippines, Saipan, and Guam and was Honorably Discharged.
He married Joan McCurdy in November 1946. They had four children. They enjoyed 44 years together, until Joan passed away in November 1990. Joy spent the majority of his working years in the grocery business working for The Rexburg Food Center and BrownÕs Grocery. They moved to St. Anthony in 1963 and owned and operated JoyÕs Market until 1986.
Joy married Helen Allen in 1991and they spent 20 years together. Helen passed away in November 2011. Joy and Helen served a family history mission in the Arkansas, North Little Rock area.
Joy had a great love of life. He enjoyed traveling, winter sports, pack trips in the summer, and fishing. His most treasured possessions were his family and friends.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served honorably in a variety of church callings.
Joy is survived by his four children: Larry (Vicki) Johnson, Toni Shepard, Franki Skeen, and Conni Lyons. His surviving brother, Rees, resides in Cheyenne, WY. He is also survived by stepchildren: Sheila (Terry) Tibbitts, Don (Kathy) Allen, and Rex Allen. He also leaves 22 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Geraldine Johnson, siblings Glen Johnson, Lucille Ricks, Ruth Johnson, Gerald Johnson, David Johnson, and Nancy Centro, and two grandsons, Levi and Daniel Johnson.
Services will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 11:00 am at the St. Anthony LDS Stake Center. Family will receive friends on Monday, May 13, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Bidwell Funeral Home in St. Anthony, and on Tuesday from 10:00 to 10:45 prior to the service. Interment will be at Teton-Newdale Cemetery.
