Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, he graduated from West Point in 1840 and was commissioned an officer in the 1st US Artillery. He served in the Mexican War where he lost his right arm and for his performance was brevetted Major. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he resigned his commission and offered his services to North Carolina. In September 1861, he was appointed Brigadier General commander-in-chief of the Confederate North Carolina State forces. In August 1862, he was given command of the district of North Carolina and he successfully attacked and drove the Union troops from Newport. His brigade won distinctions for their particaption in the Overland Campaign and at the Battle of Cold Harbor. After the siege of Petersburg, he took command of the district of Western North Carolina which was the last organized Confederate force remaining in the state until he surrendered to the Union on May 6, 1865. After the war, he and studied law and practiced it professionally for the remainder of his life.
