Carrie Leonard Howard was born December 23rd, 1871, at Lomax, Ill. and passed to her heavenly home Tuesday, October 22, 1918, from her residence southwest of Hays at the age of 46 years, 10 months and 19 days.
She was married to John H. Gatewood, April 13, 1895, who died in July 1910, leaving in her care two step children, Jesse and Eva, both of Hays, Kansas, and five children, born to their union, Carrie, Johnnie, Francis, Thomas and Dorothy. Besides the seven children who mourn her departure she leaves a father and mother, Thomas A. and Lonesa A. Howard of Lomax, Ill, also five brothers and one sister, Leonidas B. of Gunnison, Colo., Thomas M. of Galesbury, Ill, Charles W. of Rawlins, Wyoming, Maurice of Ellis, Ks., Joseph C. of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. R.H. Scott of Lomax, Ill. All were present for the final solemn rites except her mother and one brother Joseph C. and Miss Eva Gatewood, who is visiting in Charleston, South Carolina.
She was a member of the Methodist church in Hays and lived a Christian life and has gone to her eternal reward.
Her body was buried in Mt. Allen cemetery Friday afternoon. the burial service was conducted by Rev. Snapp.
