William E. Rice

WALTON William (Willie) E. Rice, 83, of Walton, died Oct. 5, 2001, at his home.

Willie was born April 14, 1918, in Sherburne, the son of Charles and Ethel (Phillips) Rice.

He married Frances J. Welch on May 15, 1976, in Walton.

Ricee's life was being a truck driver for 42 years with Cossitt Motor Express and then Herman's Forwarding Co. He loved driving truck and always talked about his experience as a driver. Even after his retirement in 1982, he kept driving truck in his sleep; a dedicated man to his profession.

Ricee enjoyed life. He enjoyed people and loved visiting with them. He made friends very easily and enjoyed kidding with them, always saying, "If you can't take it, don't dish it out!" He enjoyed his winters in Bradenton, Fla., for 13 years, enjoying games of shuffleboard.

Other interests included watching baseball and football games, the outdoors, the flowers and watching the squirrels and birds at their feeders.

He was an active member of the Walton United Methodist Church, Truman C. Tobey Post 32 American Legion and Teamsters Retirees Club #693 of Binghamton. He served as president of the Delaware County Ostomy Club in Walton and was a past president of the Walton-Florida Picnic at Zephyrhills, Fla., and Walton.

Willie was active with the American Cancer Society, serving at its booth at the Delaware County Fair and the Harvest Festival.

Surviving are his wife, Frances, of Walton; a son, John W. Rice of West Winfield; two sisters, Ella Mae Barriger of Morrisville and Bernice Koenig of Shelby, N.C.; three grandsons, John David, Scott William and Steven Joseph Rice; and a granddaughter, Carmella P. Rice; one cousin, Joseph Dibble of Norwich; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, "Little" Ruth Rice and Viola Wilcox.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at the Walton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Chervelle Phillip, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Walton Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held at the church from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Wednesday.
