Soldier's Medal Citation
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier's Medal to Sergeant George Joseph Irving, Jr. (ASN: 38380105), United States Army, for heroism on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 14 June 1945. When an exhausted swimmer was being carried out to sea by the current and undertow, Sergeant Irving at the risk of his own life swam to the aid of the stricken soldier and assisted in bringing him to safety. In disregarding his own safety to save the life of a drowning man, Sergeant Irving displayed heroism, reflecting the highest traditions of the military service.
