Passes Away After a Brief
Two Weeks Illness at
Ripe Old Age
Mr. John Gast, whose illness from kidney trouble was spoken of in a recent issue of this paper, passed away last Saturday evening about 10:30 o'clock after an illness of about two weeks.
Almost immediately after he was forced to his bed it was known that he would not be able at his age to combat that disease and the children were notified of his condition, many of them coming to assist in ministering to his wants and comfort in his last days. Thus he was surrounded by loved ones to the end.
Mr. Gast will be greatly missed in the community. Being past the age of physical labor, he was a familiar figure on our streets, always having a cheerful word of greeting for everyone. Much of his time was spent in visiting the sick and by these traits he had endeared himself to all.
John Gast was born in Germany September 12, 1839. He came to Canada with his parents in 1845, staying there until 1861 when he came to Allamakee county Iowa, making that his home until 1910 when he came to McIntire to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. A.E. Adams.
On April 7, 1861 he was married to Kathryn Heimbauch, who died June 6, 1911. To this union were born eleven children, two dying in infancy and Adolph on December 19, 1919. The remaining children are Mrs. J.F. Wachter of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, A.H. Gast of Nora Springs, Iowa, Mrs. Henry Erby [Erbe] of Osage, Iowa, Mrs. A.E. Adams of McIntire, Iowa, John Gast of Sanborn, Iowa, Mrs. Dave Gast of Nora Springs, Iowa, Walter and Ira Gast on the homestead in Allamakee county. These with many grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of friends are left to mourn his loss.
His health had been failing for several months but he was confined to his bed for only the past two weeks, gradually growing weaker until the evening of July 21 when he passed to the Great Beyond at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 9 days.
The funeral was held from the home of Mrs. Adams on Monday, July 23d at 2:00 p.m., the services being conducted by the Rev. Mr. Bodenham, interment being made in Wayne cemetery at McIntire, Iowa
--------------
John was the son of David and Margaret Gast and the husband of Catherine (Heimbach) Gast.
He was the father of 11 children.
