When not yet 18, Joe Nuinez was allowed to make a cattle drive to Kansas from Yorktown in 1883; upon his return he married Mary Jane Hearn 30 October 1884. - she was the daughter of James and Sarilda Trosper Hearn and a step daughter to John Clark.
Although Joe Nuinez had no formal education he successfully acquired a ranch and raised his family; a son and four daughters. He appreciated education and was able to send his children to school, some of the girls attended Sam Houston State Normal College. He was able to retire in Yorktown where both he and wife Mary Jane are buried at Westside cemetery.
