John married Juliet Elizabeth Kitty (Thompson) Abell ["Bettie"]. She was the daughter of Meriwether Thompson and Martha Slaughter (Broaddus) Thompson ["Patsy"].

In the 1850 U.S. Census, John and Bettie were living in Jefferson County, (now) West Virginia, and he had no occupation listed.

In the 1870 U.S. Census, John and Bettie were living in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri, and he was a "hotel proprietor."

In the 1880 U.S. Census, John was still living in St. Joseph and had no occupation listed. Bettie was not living with him in 1880.

John was a widower and a "hotel keeper" at the time of his death. He died of paralysis which he had for 5 days.
