Richard was a Private First Class in the Marine Corps, assigned to the Marine Detachment on board the Carrier USS Lexington (CV-2).

He was killed when the USS Lexington was hit and sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea.

A memorial plaque is on the backside of his parents tombstone.

He is also remembered on the Walls of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines and at the Battle of the Coral Sea Memorial Park in Australia.
