In 1901 he was diagnosed with chronic Arterial Rheumatism or arthritis that was attributed to the Sun Stroke he had while in the Philippines. He suffered from the affects of the Sun Stroke for the rest of his life. He joined the "Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators and Paperhangers of America" and despite poor health was considered a prominent painter and paperhanger for many years. His son William Edward's birth certificate shows him employed at T.O, Warfand Furniture.
