Served in the Spanish American War from May2, 1898 until April 10, 1899 when he received an early discharge from the Army after suffering a Sun Stroke while stationed in the Philippines. He was hospitalized at the Regiment Hospital in Manila until June 1899. He re-enlisted in August 1900 and was in Galveston, Texas during the 1900 flood. He survived the storm that tore off all of his clothes except his underwear, by holding onto a tree.

From there he transferred to Ft. Clarke and later to Ft. Duncan at Eagle Pass, Texas. On May 24, 1901 he was discharged and became a civilian looking for work. In 1901 he was diagnosed with chronic Arterial Rheumatism or arthritis that was attributed to the Sun Stroke he had while in the Philippines. He suffered from the affects of the Sun Stroke for the rest of his life. He joined the "Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators and Paperhangers of America" and despite poor health was considered a prominent painter and paperhanger for many years. His son William Edward's birth certificate shows him employed at T.O, Warfand Furniture.

Married Lena Longkeith September 1901 in Cleburne and they later divorced. She was born August 1881.

Married Pearl Lee December 23, 1914.
