In 1874 at least 4 married couples (Nathaniel & Hannah Louis & Caroline Jim Lauderbaugh & Cindy (Dennis) and John Edmonds & Martha (Dennis) and their children left for California, traveling in freight train box cars, along with camping gear, house hold goods, tools, food, etc. When the train stopped at sidings at times up to four, hours they built open fires and baked bread in a dutch oven and also washed clothes. Water was carried in a 50 gallon vinegar barrel
