In 1873 Louis Dennis left Deep Creek Iowa, on an eleven month exploratory trip by boat to the Pacific Coast. After exploring Northern California an also making a water trip to Portland, Oregon. he returned home with reports of promising opportunities near Big Springs, not far from Yreka, California.

In 1874 at least 4 married couples (Nathaniel & Hannah Louis & Caroline Jim Lauderbaugh & Cindy (Dennis) and John Edmonds & Martha (Dennis) and their children left for California, traveling in freight train box cars, along with camping gear, house hold goods, tools, food, etc. When the train stopped at sidings at times up to four, hours they built open fires and baked bread in a dutch oven and also washed clothes. Water was carried in a 50 gallon vinegar barrel
