Though his baptism is not recorded there, William Pitkin was born in 1635 in Berkhamstead, Saint Peter's Parish, Hertfordshire, England. He emigrated to Connecticut and settled in Hartford where he was one of the prominent founders of that then town. He married there Hannah Goodwin in 1661. He died 16 d 12 m 1694 in Hartford and several of his descendants have achieved local notice and some national prominence.

Inscription
His headstone, erected by A.P. Pitkin of Hartford, reads,"The grave of William Pitkin, progenitor of the name in America. He emigrated from London in the year 1659, died Dec. 16, 1694, age 59 years, and intelligent christian, highly respected."
