Dick was born in December 1911 in Ripley Township, which has no settlements, one of the 16 townships of Butler County, in the northeastern central part of Iowa.
He is the last of eight children and the third son.

In 1920 Dick (8 y), his parents Fred Koopman (47 y), Anna (39 y) and his siblings Ben (21 y), Lilly (20 y), Eice (18 y), Tena (16 y), Nancy (14 y) and John (10 y)) lived still in Butler County, Iowa.

In 1930 Dick Koopmen (18 y) lived with the family of his sister Tena Koopman Schmidt (27 y) in Bennezette, Butler County, Iowa.

On 14 April 1940 V. Koopman, child of Richard D (!) and Louise Voigts, was born in Mercy Hospital, Waverly, Bremer County, Iowa.

On 24 April 1940 farm laborer Richard Koopman (28 y), his wife Louise (28 y, Iowa), their daughter Keitha (6 y, Iowa) and their son Richard (0 y, Iowa) lived with Louise's parents, farmer W C Voights (62 y, Iowa) and Marie (55 y, Germany) at an own farm in West Point Township, Butler County, Iowa. In 1935 these families resided in Phoenix, Arizona.

Richard Koopman, husband of Louise, died on 14 October 1961 at the age of 49 years in the university city of Ann Arbor, seat of Washtenaw County, in the southeastern part of Michigan. He is buried in Wayland, Allegan County, in the western part of Michigan.
