Hartswell Butler was born near the Green River, just outside of Munfordville, Hart County, KY. Her parents were Willis Harris Butler & Clara Bird Jaggers Butler. As many of the folks from Kentucky do - my grandmother was known by her middle name, Hartswell.
I had asked my grandmother how she ended up with the name Hartswell. She told me that her parents were going to name her Lydia Elizabeth after her grandmothers. But when her mother found out that her mother-in-law's middle name was Eliza (Annie Eliza Clopton), rather than Elizabeth, Clara stated that she would not give her child the name, Eliza. So, for over two years my great-grandparents called my grandmother "Baby" because they could not agree on a name. Finally, well into the third year of "Baby's" life, my 2x-great-grandfather Boaz Jaggers walked into their house and told Willis and Clara that the child's name is going to be Gladys Hartswell. Willis and Clara agreed - well - I'm not sure Willis agreed because until his death he continued to call Hartswell, Baby.
Baby's, I mean - Hartswell's father Willis was an insurance salesman who brought his family to Canton, Ohio. Hartswell aka Hardie graduated in 1929 from Canton McKinley High School. Hartswell was known for her beautiful singing voice and at one time was told she could become the female, Caruso. However, at 23 years old she married 53 year old Edward Martin Fashbaugh and her career as a mother and business woman began.
As her children grew, Hartswell started performing in local stage productions as an actress/singer and continued performing for decades, her nickname during her acting years was, Potzie. I remember when she would practice her singing, the windows in the music room would rattle -she had a very powerful voice.
Hartswell was a business manager and member of the Canton Urban League's Board for seven years, Member of the Credit Executives Club, and the American Business Women's Association.
