Religious figure. Born Catherine de Vigri in Bologna, the daughter of a diplomat. When she was ten years old, her father sent her to the court of the Marquis of Ferrara to be a companion to Princess Margarita. While in Ferrara she studied literature and the fine arts. After the marriage of Princess Margarita Catherine became a Poor Claire nun. Catherine was chosen as abbess, a position that she held until her death. She was buried without a coffin; her body was exhumed eighteen days later because of cures attributed to her and also because of a sweet scent coming from her grave. Her body was found to be incorrupt. Pope Benedict XIII canonized her in 1712 and she is the Patron Saint of artists. Her feast day is on the 9th March.
