Around the age of 16, he joined his brother Herbert and immigrated to Willmar MN. He worked as a laborer and then for the Great Northern Railroad.
At the age of 27, he married Carrie Hanson in Breckenridge, MN. They had a son and a daughter, but the marriage was an unhappy one and they divorced.
About 1900, his railroad job as a stationery engineer took him to the state of WA. By 1910 he was working as a bartender and later worked as a clerk in a cigar store.
Ed passed away of heart disease at the age of 56.
