Revolutionary War veteran, serving as a Private in the Virginia Militia. He served in 1776, participated in the Battle of Camden in 1780, and joined the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. Avery and Mary had at least nine known children (birth dates in parentheses): Drury (1783), Joel (1785), Saludy (1787), Haley (1789), Shadrack (1792), Mary (1794), Sherwood (1796), Thomas (1798), and Elizabeth (1801). While there have been suggestions that Avery's middle name was Soloman, primary source documentation has not been located.
