Enlisted on 4 August 1862 at Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan; he was residing at Emmett Township, Calhoun County, Michigan prior to his enlistment at 23 years of age; mustered in on 16 August 1862, Company C, Michigan 20th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; severely wounded on 3 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, Hanover County, Virginia which subsequently led to amputation of his right leg; mustered out on 9 June 1864 dying of wound complications at Washington, D. C. (The U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 records a left leg amputation and date of death as June 8.) He is interred at Arlington National Cemetery, memorial # 30398505.
