Ann was the daughter of Joseph and Kezia (Parke) McClellan. She married William Hemphill on December 5, 1804 and had four children: James Alexander, Joseph, Elizabeth, and Kezia Ann Hemphill. She was the maternal grandmother of Civil War Lieutenant Colonel Thomas S. Bell, who is buried near her.
