Eliza Pressly, eldest daughter of Dr. Samuel Patterson Pressly and the former Elizabeth Knox Hearst, was born near Cedar Springs in Abbeville County, South Carolina on the 26th of March 1812. Her family were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians; who had come to America in the mid 1760's and helped establish Long Cane & Cedar Springs Associate Reformed Presbyterian churches. In the early 1830's, Eliza's family moved to Wilcox County, Alabama.

Eliza Pressly was twice married:
(1) Rev. George M. Haslett; with whom she had one son:
William K. Haslett (1840 - 1842)
(2) Abraham Mastin Cook; with whom she had the following known children:
Albert Cook (1847 – 1930)
Elizabeth Knox Cook (1848 – 1938)
Tabitha Jane Cook (1851 – 1895)
Samuel Daniel Cook (1853 – 1855)
Mary Caroline Cook (1858 – 1932)
