He was the son of Russell and Sarah Stokes Lyons. He was predeceased by six brothers: Nelson, Ulysses Grant, Charles, Herbert, Thomas and Everett and three sisters, Eva Jordan, Mabel Dohrman and Mary Robinson.
As a representative of the 'The Greatest Generation' he was proud to have been continually employed in a number of positions including bus driver, electrician, laborer, painter, farmer, truck driver, soldier, and maintenance man from the mid 20's (including the Great Depression) through his retirement from IBM in 1975. He was a talented handyman, gardener, and fix-it man throughout his life. A genuine old-time rural upstate New Yorker. Vernon was a WWII Veteran and life member of the New Paltz VFW, Town of Plattekill Historical Society and Aloha Homeowners Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Kathryn Fowler Lyons, his nephew and niece, Wayne and Alice Harris of Clintondale with whom they resided during his illness; his grandsons and their wives, Jack and Kim Harris of Gardiner and Peter Vernon and Jody Harris of New Paltz. Great-grandchildren, Zachary and Brooke provided him with hours of Joy. He relished his role of patriarch of the Harris family and his relationship with his nieces, Bernice Raimonda of Montgomery, Jacqulin DiMino of Florida, and Linda Harris of Texas and their children.
He redefined the meaning of the role uncle to the entire family through his generosity, patience and fortitude. He will be lovingly remembered for his unassuming manner by the entire Fowler Family Association of which he was a charter member.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sutton Funeral Home, Inc., 305 Crescent Ave., Clintondale, NY.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 11th at 11 a.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Modena, NY.
Burial will be in Rosendale Plains Cemetery, Rosendale, NY.
Memorial donations can be made in Unc's memory to Hospice of Ulster County.
