As the owner of a farm which has been in the Gustin family since 1837, I would like our family to be included in the Madison County historical book. I was born September 24, 1907 at Chesterfield, Madison County to John Adolphus and Nellie May (Trimble) Gustin, the youngest of five children: Palmer Starr, Marguerite Jane, Mattie Elizabeth, and Irene Trimble Gustin. Palmer, an enlisted soldier in Company C, 67th Infantry, died October 24, 1918 of Spanish influenza and pneumonia, at Camp Sheridan, AL. Marguerite Hunter, widow of James F. Hunter, resides in Chesterfield. Mattie E. and Irene (Mrs. George W. Johnston) reside in Anderson. My wife Margaret and I live in Daleville.
I was educated in Union Township elementary schools, Clem and later Valley Grove, and attended Anderson High School, graduating with the class of 1926. I began working at Delco-Remy Division of General Motors at age 19, retiring in 1968 with over 40 years service. Most of these years were spent in small tools, progressing from tool crib attendant, trouble shooter, foreman, to special assignment.
My first wife was Mary Alice (Hale) Gustin of Progress, Indiana. We had two children, Martha Ann and Paula Jane. Mary Alice died in November, 1959, and a year later I was married to Mrs. Margaret (Osborn) Cromer, a widow, of Daleville. We are active members of Pike's Peak Christian Church, and I belong to Ovid Masonic Lodge 164, New Columbus. We have six grandchildren. Martha and her husband, Duane Osburn, have four sons: Daniel Arthur, James Dale, Stephen Dean and David Carson. Paula and her husband, Nicky Bronnenberg, have two children, Kathy Lynn and Michael Bronnenberg.
The Gustin family traces its lineage to Augustine Jean from the Isle of Jersey who migrated to America in 1675. Amos Gustin, our great-grandfather, came to Union Township from Ohio. The farm Section 26 was deeded to my father in 1912 and to me in 1937. Our old home is still standing, and our two daughters have homes nearby on the farm. I visit the farm most every day."
