Esther C. Hagey, 91, of Marcus, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.

Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus. Rev. Liz Pfeifle will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date at Marcus Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at the Earnest-Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Wednesday.

Esther Christine Hagey was born on February 14, 1922 in Meriden, Iowa, the daughter of Chris and Agnes (Andersen) Nielsen. She graduated from Meriden High School and continued her education by attending beauty school in Sioux City, Iowa.

On October 3, 1942, Esther and J. Edgar Hagey were united in marriage at the Danish Lutheran Church in Marcus. Along with raising her family, Esther operated a beauty shop in Marcus for over 40 years. J. Edgar passed away on December 8, 2005. Esther remained at home in Marcus until moving to the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen on January 23, 2009.

Esther was a lifelong member of the Danish Lutheran Church, later Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus. She enjoyed golfing and playing cards. Most important to Esther was the time spent with her children and grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Sharon Miller of Portland, OR, Jim Hagey of Marcus, Larry Hagey and his wife Laurie of Moorland, IA, Barry Hagey and his wife Louise of Waseca, MN, and Bill Hagey and his wife Dena of Marshalltown, IA; grandchildren, Lara Miller of Portland, OR, Alyssa Subbert and her husband Jason of Grimes, IA, Kelly Gunderson and her husband Chris of Omaha, NE, Kristi Vermazen and her husband Curt of Fort Dodge, IA, Sean Hagey and his wife Theresa of Sioux City, and Travis Gerstandt and Matt Gerstandt and his wife Cassandra of Marshalltown; great-grandchildren, Kassie Vinsand, Big Jake Baker, Kelsie, Jacob, Jenna, and Callie Vermazen, Paige, Ethan, and Nicole Gunderson, Avery, Nick, and Ella Subbert, and Isabelle, Micah, and Josie Hagey; two sisters, Vera Wiese and her husband Donald of Larabee, IA and Elna Lundell of Livingston WI; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J. Edgar; son-in-law, Jack Miller; granddaughter Jennifer Hagey; great-granddaughter, Alyssa Vinsand; four sisters, Elisabeth Pedersen, Anna Mae Wilcox, Marie French, and Margaret Birch; two brothers, Niels and Andy Nielsen; and a nephew, Steve Hagey.
