Bowling married Matalda Storms. They had ten children in 25 years. Bowling served in the Civil War, Union army for 3 1/2 years and was discharged for disability injury in Nashville. After months of recovery he re-enlisted the second time in Wagon Service. He lived a long life of 76 years.

Bowling Green Poynter's death certificate names "Piney Grove" Cemetery as place of burial. Source: "A History of Laurel County" tells the story of how in 1920 Pine Grove cemetery was sold and subsequently later part of A.R. Dyche Memorial Park.
