Herbert N. Melgard

Herbert Nordal Melgard died early Saturday morning, Nov. 13, at the city hospital in Barron, the victim of gangrene which came as an aftermath of a shooting accident which occurred at his home near Barron Sunday evening, Nov. 7. He was 47 years old.

He was born at Cashton, June 3, 1890, the son of Olaf and Amelia Melgard. His youth was spent at that city, where he participated in the monument business operated by his father and brothers. On Nov. 26, 1912, he wed Alfreda Swarthout of Sparta and to this union was born two sons. Shortly after marriage, the couple moved to Sparta, where the family firm was also in business. Here they remained until August, 1913, when they moved to a farm near Barron. Two years later they moved to Rice Lake, then, in 1922 they returned to Sparta. In 1925 Mr. Melgard opened a monument business in Richland Center, but in 1927 the family returned to the farm at Barron. During the past five years the deceased was employed as a salesman for the Northern Granite Co. of this city.

He is survived by Alfreda Melgard, his wife, two sons, Lynn, of the U.S. Marine Corps in Shanghai, China and Nordal, at home, his mother, Mrs. Amelia Melgard of Cashton, three brothers, Eilert of River Falls, Carl of Sparta,and Howard of Cashton, and four sisters, Anna, Mrs. F.J. Wells of Barron; Ida, Mrs. Paul A. Lyon of New Lisbon; Rose, Mrs. B.O. Myhre of Superior; and Nina, Mrs. Lyle Salmon of Sparta, all of whom were present at the last rites, except his son, Lynn.

Following a brief service at the home, funeral services were held Monday at the Norwegian Lutheran church in Barron with internment at Wayside cemetery,the Rev. B.B. Ostrem, officiating.
