Her only name actually known was "Ann". Some people think that her name may have been Nancy "Ann or Nan" as Nancy is often shortened to that. Also some have added Jane, as a middle names but, I doubt that is so, as the use of middle name were not common at that time. William Wright's memorial said her maiden name was "Evens" and Prof. W. Wayne Smith, Moscow, Idaho said her maiden name was "Morgan". The following is my opinion and only MINE. But I think her maiden name is "JANE" I am aware this is a long shot and may be dead wrong.. Maybe it will be proved one way or another.

" Jane (surname) "
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jane is a surname, related to the given name Jane, which is ultimately derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן‬, Yôḥanan, meaning "Graced by Yahweh".

There are 58 other memorials on "Find-A-Grave" with the surname "Jane"

(Birth records of some of her children list her maiden name as Isom. Find A Grave suggests some discrepancy with her last name, some claiming it is Evens, others Morgan. I'm going with the birth records. ..Isom. Allison Allen originally shared this on 26 Jun 2016 on Ancestry & I have not been able to prove it to be true)

* The inscription on William Wright's stone reads "Son of R & N Wright" and "A soldier of '76".

Richard Wright, Sr., was born 1730 and died in 1785. We know his will was probated Feb. 8, 1785. Married Ann (or Nancy "Nan" or Jane) in 1748 (according to D.A.R. records)

By Grant Wright: "Tradition has it that Richard Wright, Sr. was born in England, emigrated to Wales, came back into England, and he, with four brothers, emigrated to America probably sometime about 1746. They came to the Eastern coast of Maryland. Here they separated. Two went into New England, one went into New York, and Richard with one brother came into Virginia, then to Randolph Co., N.C. Later Richard moved to Rowan Co., N.C., where he spent the remainder of his life." Some of this statement has been proven wrong. - According to church records, Philbert, his farther, married Esther Becraft 3 Dec 1712 at Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's County, MD.

Richard Wright, Sr. was a large land-owner and accumulated well for one in his day. Richard Sr. was a revolutionary soldier, a private in the N.C. Militia from Rowan Co. It is said that his five oldest sons also fought in the Revolution.

We know that Richard Wright, Sr., and his sons Benjamin, Richard, Jr. and William, have been used many times for D.A.R. membership. We have no information about Peter or John.

I ( Shirley Gragg )am not sure how the information came about many years ago [from researchers that weren't related] that Richard, Sr. and Ann [her surname is still unknown] had any daughters. Based on Richard's will, they did have the 8 sons – all of which are named appropriately on your site and in order of their birth.

Several things to be considered –
• If Richard and Ann had a daughter [I've seen as many as 4 daughters listed for them– one of which Sarah, was actually their granddaughter. However, she was the daughter of Richard Wright, Jr. and 1st wife, Nancy Morgan]. Any daughter would certainly have been named in Richard, Sr.'s will. He would have named daughters even if they had married and were provided for otherwise. They are a very family-oriented clan.

• Richard and Ann were never in South Carolina.

Richard Wright, Sr.'s wife, ANN
While it may not be your statement, this statement is in error - "Married Ann (or Nancy "Nan" or Jane) in Rowan County, N.C. in 1748 (according to D.A.R. records)"
Richard, Sr. was born in MD [closer to 1726] based on his witnessing his uncle's will in 1742 in MD. [He had to be 21 yrs of age to do so.]
He would not leave MD until closer to 1752 - because eldest son, Benjamin, Sr. was born in MD as well - [abt 1751]so RW would had to be married to 'ANN' [still unknown] abt 1750.
No record of RW, Sr. being in NC until early 1762.
