Born on October 17, 1913 to Charles Austin and Sarah Puryear Barber, Gladys lived most of her life in Senatobia. She was a school teacher, having received her degree at Harding College and taught in several schools in the area. At the age of 20, she joined the WAACs and served three years during the World War II era. She also worked at Sears Roebuck in Memphis for a time.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Lorena Lea Boswell, and her two brothers, Charles Hubert Barber and Harold Austin Barber.
She never married, but held dear her nieces and nephews. They were Mary Ann Eden of Ft. Worth, Texas, Sarah Lea (Sally) Smith of Ft. Smith, Ark., Earl Boswell of Huber Hts., Ohio, Geri Wright of Burlington, N.C., Sue Etienne of Herndon, Va., and Jim Barber of Hattiesburg, Miss. She had many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
