Leona Grace Carpenter
Leona Grace Carpenter, a long¬time resident of California City, passed away at her home here on Saturday, October 12, 2002.
Mrs. Carpenter was born November 25, 1931 in South Dakota. She moved to California City more than 35 years ago. Mrs. Carpenter managed the Desert Deli in California City for many years until 1990 when she suffered a stroke.
Her children recalled that their mother had a heart for wayward juveniles with more than 70 of them eventually calling her "Mother" and looking to her for love and advice. Her love of young people led her to become involved in the founding of local a Girl Scout troop.
Mrs. Carpenter also loved gardening, knitting, painting and raising her seven children.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gene L. Carpenter in 1980.
Mrs. Carpenter is survived by her loving children Henry Carpenter of West Covina, CA, Richard Moore, Grady Moore and Cheri Carpenter all of California City, CA, Kenny Carpenter of Colorado, Kimberly Carpenter of Las Lunas, NM and Craig Moore of Ridgecrest, CA; three brothers, Bob Brown of St. Helen's, OR, Clark Brown of Virginia and Dale Brown of Manteca, CA and one sister, Mae Fortier of Scottsdale, AZ.
Mrs. Carpenter leaves behind 21 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 19, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Stickel Mortuary in Mojave.
A gathering to celebrate Mrs. Carpenter's life will be held at the family home, 8824 Catalpa, California City, following the service.
