Danny Jones: The life of a legend
Danny Jones was so much more than Danny R. Jones, A Law Corporation.
He was husband, father, benefactor, teacher and friend to so many people, and we celebrate his life today.
Danny and Joan came to this area 40 years ago, and homesteaded a ranch. When they first arrived, Joan said there was nothing in the area but rabbits and the alfalfa fields. The Jones' had a very long dirt landing strip where DC-3 airplanes used to fly in promoters of a place called California City.
As the city started, so did Danny's involvement in the new community. Danny worked to establish the city's first medical center, bringing in Dr. Niles Okajima to the Center's first resident physician. Even though he and Joan did not permanently move to the area until about 10 years ago, Danny has continually encouraged and supported the city. His most recent contribution to the business district is the 8100 Professional Building where his law office was located. Danny conceived the need for the organization of various professional services such as legal, real estate, accounting, escrow, finance, paralegal, insurance, etc. and with the help of a local contractor, took on the challenge of rebuilding an aging theater into a two-story office condominium housing these services in separate suites. The 8100 Professional Building has been enormously successful both in concept and practice
After he graduated from University of Southern California in 1949 with his Juris Doctor degree, he joined the law firm of Austin, Austin, Jones and Chafee in Compton, California. In 1966, he established the law firm of Jones and Weldon, which became Danny R. Jones, A Law Corporation, in 1977, and a joint venture with Jones and Barnett until 1986, specializing in personal injury, products liability, and aviation accidents, he was the sole stockholder in Danny R. Jones, ALC from 1977 until he died. Norwalk, California was the home of Danny's law practice for many years, where he represented clients from as far away as Holland. Melvin Belli, Richard Gerry and F. Lee Bailey. He assisted Belli in defending the Jack Ruby case in 1963. Danny founded the Southeast Law Center in 1968, because he believed that legal services should be made available to people who could not afford expensive attorneys. Through the use of attorneys practicing in various areas of the law, all assembled in one central location, people had ready access to the specialized legal services they required. Danny and fellow attorney Randy Kramer, along with the other attorneys at the Center, were awarded a government grant for three years to provide legal services for low-income clients in the Norwalk area. Danny's career in the law took him to the Superior Court of the State of California, where he served as Judge Pro-Tern, and he was admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States.
He was an organizer and co-founder of the Mojave Desert Bank in 1989 and sat on the Board of Directors for the fledging financial institution as it expanded. The bank now has three branches.
In addition to being a well-known attorney, Danny was also a published author. He has written several books including ones on Japanese and Russian law. He co-authored with Melvin Belli, Crime and It's Causes in Los Angeles, Life and Law in Russia, and he co-authored Courtroom Ready Reference for the Plaintiff Attorney, How We Handle Your Case and Lawyers Ready Reference to Class Actions with Charles R. Weldon.
Danny was also a great hunter. He hunted Polar bears in Alaska and elephant and Kudu in Kenya. He loved sports fishing in Mexico. Danny and Joan traveled extensively including the USSR, China and Africa. He participated fully in life as it came, and whatever he did, he did it well. Danny was a licensed pilot, and loved to fly, right or left seat, it didn't matter. He shared his enthusiasm with his friends and family, and always had a great story to tell, many times, depreciatingly, on himself. He had a tremendous intellect, and when he bent the light of that mind on a problem, it didn't go unsolved for long.
Danny was equally at home with Pancho Barnes, Chuck Yeager and Bruce Minard, an old desert rat who lived in Jawbone Canyon. He loved a good joke and his laughter has brightened the lives of everyone who shared his life. Most recently, he applied his lifelong desire to help others with his problem-solving ability, and with Joan, founded the Los Angeles de Mojave Foundation, dedicated to charitable, educational, humanitarian and religious works, most recently in Mexico.
Danny has four grown children and eight grandchildren, the delight of their Granddad's eye. Among the many things they and many other local children learned under Danny's tutelage was how to stalk jackrabbits through the desert, camp under the stars, and other survival skills of being on one's own.
Danny likened his life unto a resort. He said recently, that the day he graduated from Law School, the limousine met him at the steps of the auditorium and whisked him away to a life where he lacked for nothing. He flourished in the finest of surroundings and knew it would go on forever . .. then one day they asked for the keys to the suite. "I don't want to give this up," said Danny, to which the Concierge replied, "Ah, but Danny, we have prepared even finer quarters for you; the best! You must give up, move over and move on to a better place." And so he did.
Rosary services were held Wednesday night and funeral services will be held 10:30 Thursday morning, November 21, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Mr. Jones' final resting place will be at the East Kern Cemetery in California City.
Anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of Danny Jones, do so by donating to Los Angeles de Mojave Foundation, P.O. Box 2692, California City, CA 83504. These donations will be used for Danny’s beloved Mexico humanitarian projects.

California City has lost its most ardent supporter. The passing of Danny Jones will leave a gaping hole in the city politics, economy and over all business climate for years to come.
Danny wanted to work with anyone to accomplish the growth and prosperity of this community, wanting no part of others prejudices and jealousies. I can't even begin to verbalize his zest for making concepts into actual practice. A few of these concepts are now: The Professional Center, The Courtyard, East Kern Escrow Co., Mojave Desert Bank and more yet to come. Danny was quick to put up his share of the time and energy necessary to make a project successful.
California City will become the community we all hope for and Danny Jones will be remembered as the person who knew it all along.
