"Grandpa Dickey" was born about 1774 reportedly in Bedford County, Virginia. He was the son of John Wood and Nelly, whose last name is unknown. He had brothers John Wood, who moved to the Midwest, and Henry Wood, who moved to Missouri.

Grandpa Dickey's greatest claim to fame was his four sucessive wives, who all predeceased him: Rachel Cockram, Fannie Brammer, Elizabeth DeHart and Lucendia Via. A forward looking man, Dickey arranged their graves so he would have a wife on either side, on at his head and one at his feet. He and wives 1,3 and 4 were the parents of at least 17 children, and as far as I can determine, at least 110 grandchildren. Among his descendants are NASCAR's Wood Brothers Racing Team.
