Br James Arthur Dods SM

James, who went by Jim, was born on February 10, 1939, to Chester and Genevieve (May) Dods in Honolulu, Hawai'i. He has two brothers, Chester Jr and Richard, and sister Danielle (Dods) Bedore. Jim first met the Marianists at St Louis School and decided to enter the novitiate after a Marianist retreat. Jim professed first vows on August 15, 1958, at the novitiate in Santa Cruz CA. Jim began his college studies at St Mary's College in Moraga CA and earned a bachelor's degree at Chaminade College, now Chaminade University of Honolulu, in 1962. He then taught at Junipero Serra High School in Gardena CA and Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco CA. Br Jim professed perpetual vows on August 18, 1963. An interest in other cultures led Br Jim to Yokohama, Japan, in 1964, where he would spend six years as an English teacher, counselor and administrator. He returned to California in 1970 to spend 15 years serving at Archbishop Riordan and work on his master's degree in education, which he completed in 1973.

During his 15 years at Archbishop Riordan, Br Jim served as a teacher, guidance director and academic dean. He also coordinated the California Scholarship Federation program for San Francisco District schools. From 1985 until 1987, Br Jim served as a teacher and administrator at De Sales Junior-Senior High School in Walla Walla, Washington. He then spent 13 years as principal of St Anthony Junior Senior High School in Maui, Hawai'i. Br Jim very much enjoyed his time at St Anthony and said he loved its students and faculty. Br Jim took a sabbatical in 2000 at the Sangre de Cristo Center in Santa Fe, NM. From 2001 until 2004, Br Jim served as an interim principal of Riordan High School in San Francisco. He was assigned to St Louis School in 2004 to assist as a college and scholarship advisor. Br Jim would spend hours writing letters of recommendation for the students. He took this very seriously and wrote a personal letter about each student. Br Jim often kept up acquaintances with students long after they graduated, and "it seemed to be more than just Christmas greetings."

Br James Dods, of the Center Marianist Community (Honolulu), died in the service of the Blessed Virgin Mary on June 25, 2011 in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the age of 72, with 52 years of religious profession.
