William J. Angel, 85, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at his residence.

Mr. Angel was born in Chicago, Ill. on April 14, 1912, the son of the late Robert Angel and Elizabeth (nee Murphy) Angel. He had been a resident of Racine since his early childhood.

Mr. Angel graduated from St. Catherine's High School, Class of 1931, where he distinguished himself in basketball and football earning all state honors and setting a new state scoring record in football. In 1939 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Potman who preceded him in death in 1983. In 1984, he married Elizabeth Porterfield McClanan and resided in Virginia Beach until her death in September 1997. Mr. Angel had been employed at Western Printing for a number of years before founding Angel Lithographing, where he served as president from 1947 until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Angel was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and won many local and statewide events. He enjoyed his memberships at Meadowbrook Country Club, Racine Country Club, Innisbrook Country Club and Cypress Run Country Club, both of Tarpon Spring, Fla., and Princess Anne Country Club of Virginia Beach.

Survivors include his five children, Ann Walling and her husband, Stephen, of Ashtabula, Ohio, Carol Greco and her husband, Carl, of Kenosha, Wis., William R. Angel and his wife, Jill, Richard T. Angel and his wife, Jody, all of Racine, James J. Angel and his wife, Catherine, of Lynchburg, Va.; 15 grandchildren, Christopher and Phelps Walling, Meaghan McKinnon and her husband, Stephen, Camille, Michael and Maureen Greco, Katie and Brett Angel, Quinn, Elizabeth, Susan and Catherine Angel, Carter, Riley and Spenser Angel; stepchildren, Susan Boatwright and her husband, John, of Charlotte, N.C., William McClanan and his wife, Bunny, of Virginia Beach; six step-grandchildren, John Boatwright and his wife, Barbara, Elizabeth Field and her husband, Paul, Patricia, William IV, Russell and Anne McClanan; four step-great-grandchildren, Ross and Grace Boatwright, Pope and Susan Field; two brothers, Harold Angel, Robert Angel and his wife, Winnie, all of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2201 Northwestern Ave., Racine, by the Rev. Leon J. Schneider. Private interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery . Relatives and friends may meet with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Maresh-Meredith Funeral Home, Racine. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to St. Catherine's High School or All Saints Hospice.
