Ella Bevans Tompkins, 83, Winfield, Mo., formerly of Lewis County, Mo., died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, in Lincoln County Nursing Home, Troy, Mo. She was born January 21, 1922, in Lewis County near Williamstown, Mo., the daughter of Abe and Lennie Glisan Bevans. She married John Lyle Tompkins in August 1942. Mrs. Tompkins became a Christian at age 9, when she joined the Providence Baptist Church near Williamstown, Mo. She graduated from Williamstown High School with the Class of 1939 as Valedictorian of her class. She attended Kirksville State Teachers College and received her B.S. Degree from Warrensburg, Mo. She taught elemenatry school in Lewis County for seven years. She began work for the Missouri Division of Family Services April 1, 1964 and retired on October 29, 1982. Mrs. Tompkins moved with her family to the Kansas City area in 1949, residing in Independence Mo. from December 1966, to September 1986 when she moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. In December, 1986 she moved her church membership from Noland Road Baptist Church in Independence to Heritage Baptist Church, in Palmer Park Street, Colorado Springs, Colo. She returned to Missouri in November, 2004 where she lived in Winfield, Mo. Survivors include two sisters, Ola F. English, Canton, Mo., and Hazel Bevans, Winfield, Mo.; one niece, Tara Burke Leas and family of San Antonio, Tex.; one sister-in-law, LaVeta Bevans Stith, Williamstown, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, Larry Dean Tompkins and Gary Dent Tompkins; two brothers, Cecil and Robert Bevans; and one sister Mabel Lynn Burke. Visitation was Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Davis Funeral Home in Canton. Funeral services were Friday, February 11, 2005, at Davis Funeral Home in Canton, Mo., with Rev. Ernest Deatrick officiating. Interment was in Providence Cemetery near Williamstown, Mo. Pallbearers were Norman Hinton, Bob Lillard, Brian Munzlinger, Kent Munzlinger, Stanley Boltz and Ralph Lay. Memorials may be made to Providence Cemetery.
