Walter E Almquist, enlisted in the Navy in WW 1 and was sent from Great Lakes Naval Training to the Curtiss-Wright aircraft plant in Buffalo, NY to learn to assemble the planes when shipped overseas. Here he met his future wife, Amy Clare Biesenthal who was the head office secretary at Curtiss-Wright.
Following the war, Amy and Walter were married in Kansas City, MO, on March 16, 1920. They first lived on his family's farmstead in Nebraska, but remembered the lush green fields of Western NY, and decide to move.
In 1922 they purchased a dairy farm near Alden, NY.Walter started working for the Federal Land Bank during the Depression years to supplement the family income. This later became a full time job in East Aurora, NY, and in 1946 they sold the Alden farm and moved there.
In 1956, Walter purchased another dairy farm near Kent, NY where they lived until 1968 when Amy Clare died.
Walter was very active in many farm organizations, becoming president of some. Grange, Dairymen's League, Farm Bureau, draft board during WW2 in farm exemptions. He was an Elder in the Presbyterian church. He always liked antiques and a friend got him started collecting. They became his passion and he nearly refused to part with any of them.
During their later years, Walter & Amy had spent a few months during each winter at Bradenton, Florida and that is where both Amy and Walter died.
Walter and Amy's children were; Jon, Carl, Calvin, and Amy.
Walter remarried following Amy's death to a Gladys Conners Cosselman.
Amy compiled the first family history booklet for the Almquist family in 1966. A treasure for any of the descendants lucky enough to have a copy.
