George McClintock Anderson, one of Raleigh's most colorful and affable attorneys, passed away (peacefully) Thursday, February 14th at age 92. Mr. Anderson's legal and political career, his service to his community and his service to his church spanned sixty active years.
Graveside Funeral Rites will be held Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612. Funeral Rites will be held Tuesday at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 120 W. Hargett Street, Raleigh, NC 27601. The family invites everyone to fellowship with them at First Presbyterian Church following the service.
Mr. Anderson, oldest son of Robert Luther and Estelle Catterson Anderson, was a proud native of Edgecombe County, North Carolina. His 'homeplace', as he referred to it, was outside of Leggett, North Carolina. The family had a farming business and a General Store in Whitakers, North Carolina. He preferred helping his father in the general store to farm labor.
George received his early education in the Edgecombe County schools and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University and his Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University. During his college years he launched valued friendships with future Senator Robert Morgan and Senator Jessie Helms. Mr. Anderson told the News and Observer in 1977 that during his college years, students were required to greet each other. Throughout he rest of his life, this kind of friendliness was a constant and familiar attribute of George Anderson's outgoing and dynamic personality.
A veteran of World War II, Mr. Anderson served honorably in the United States Air Force (1942-1945) and the United States Army Reserves (1948-1950).
In these same years surrounding World War II, George met Frances Lucile Collins. Frances was the daughter of Joseph Linton Collins and Lucile Lupton Collins of Edenton, North Carolina. The couple married December 31, 1945 in the Methodist Church in Edenton, North Carolina. Their marriage thrived 59 years.
George Anderson opened his private law practice in Raleigh in 1951. (He had served previously as assistant Claims Manager with George Washington Life Insurance Company in Richmond, Virginia.) George held many positions during his distinguished law career. He served as Assistant Solicitor of Wake Superior Court, he was instrumental in the organization of the Wake County Academy of Criminal Trial Lawyers and served as the first president . He was active in the Wake County Bar Association and North Carolina Bar Association. He also served on the Executive Committee of the Wake County Bar Association. George was also founder of the Senior Survivors, a well-known group of older attorneys in Wake County. He was one of Wake County's most active criminal attorneys.
Attorney George McClintock Anderson represented the state and hundreds of clients in state Superior and District Courts. He also spent considerable time in Federal Courts. In 1977 he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve as U.S. Attorney-Chief Federal Lawyer-for the Eastern District of North Carolina. He served in that capacity until 1981.
George was a well-known character in downtown Raleigh. A man of indefatigable spirit and untiring love for people, Christmas was his favorite time of year. He changed from his trademark impeccable dress to a Santa Claus costume for local businesses and the Courthouse.
Politics and law were essential to George's life. His introduction to politics began with work in the campaign of former Governor William B. Umstead. He was one of John F. Kennedy's Wake County political strategists in his 1960 presidential campaign. George never minded being a political participant in behind the scenes campaign efforts. He did not seek the limelight but rather thrived in having the privilege of being part of the political process. He made two runs for North Carolina State Representative himself, but was unsuccessful.
He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. A devoted member of the Vanguard Church School Class, he also belonged to the Early Birds and attended regular Sunday service and Sunday school. He was ordained an Elder in 1977 and awarded the honor of Elder Emeritus on December 18, 1994. His minister, Bob Inskeep, described him as a "pillar of the church in the truest sense".
George was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Frances Collins Anderson, sisters, Ila Fugate and Evelyn Maurice and son-in-law Vance Heafner. He is survived by three daughters, Paige Anderson Heafner, Pamela Jo Anderson and Cheryl Lynn Anderson. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth Paige Heafner, Allison Frances Heafner, Christopher Lee Dionne, Megan Victoria Dionne, Kirsten Collins Russell, Kelsey Anderson Russell, Kayla Marie Russell and one great grandson, Ashton Lee Dionne. In addition, his sister Carolyn William survives. George also leaves over twenty nieces and nephews whom he loved like his own children.
