Daughter of Judge Lacon Dorsey Stockton and Elizabeth (Collins) Stockton. Her father was, for a time, involved in the publication of the Burlington Hawk-Eye with John Pierson, Sr., but disposed of his interest to practice law. He served as mayor of Burlington from 1850 to 1855, and was appointed judge of the Iowa Supreme Court by Governor Grimes in 1856.
