George Pierce LIVELY,
The son of Rev. Mark LIVELY and Jane BOYD, was born on 30 June 1844 (one source says 29 June) in the 66th District of Burke County, Georgia.
LIVELY enlisted in Company C, 5th Georgia Cavalry, at Camp Berrien, Georgia, on March 3, 1863.
He was promoted to corporal in late 1863 and served in this position until he surrendered on April 26, 1865. Corporal Lively was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865.
On 2 Apr 1867, George married Miss Claranella Adelaide "Kelly Bly" POWELL, daughter of Rev. Lafayette POWELL.
George was a southern gentleman and a planter. He held the office of Sunday School superintendent and deacon of Botsford Baptist Church for more than 50 years and attended regularly up to the time of his death.
Representing his church, he served as a messenger to the Georgia Baptist Hephzibah Association in 1887, 1891, 1897, 1899, 1901, 1903, 1906, 1907, 1913, and 1917.
In 1907 - 08, George represented Burke County in the Georgia Legislature. The main purpose of this mission to the legislature was to pass the state prohibition law, which was passed during his tenure. Thus, he helped pass the Georgia Prohibition Law long before National Prohibition. He died after a prolonged illness on 20 Aug 1927 at the age of 83.
