Helen Evelyn Slaight
December 27, 1915 - October 9, 2002
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 12, 2002 at the First Baptist Church, California City for Helen Evelyn Slaight, 86, who passed away in California City, CA on October 9, 2002.
Mrs. Slaight was born December 27, 1915 in Lake City, Arkansas to Alien and Della Burrow. She was married to Bill Braxton Slaight on September 16,1957 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Mrs. Slaight retired from Edwards Air Force Base Hospital in 1970 where she had worked in food preparation for nine years. While working as a GS employee at the Edwards Air Force Base Hospital, Helen took part in a training exercise that utilized base personnel for emergency preparedness. She was assigned to attend "wounded airmen" being flown out of Edwards, to Travis AFB via supersonic transport. The first time she rode in an airplane, she went supersonic. Later when her daughter received her private pilot's license, Helen was her first passenger, so, at the age of 80, she flew in her first small plane.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Linda Lunsford of California City; son, Doc M. Mothershed of Flagstaff, AZ; brother Donnie Maloy, Hot Springs, AR; sisters Maudie Korte of Peafland, TX, and Iva Mothershed of Ukiah, CA; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, William Braxton Slaight on November 10, 1997.
Pastor Larry Scott officiated at the service. Internment took place following the service at the California City Memorial Park in California City.
Wood Family Funeral Service handled the arrangements.
