Anthony "Tony" W. Mitchell 1984 Torchbearer for Olympic Games Anthony "Tony" W. Mitchell, 47, a long-time resident of California City, California, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2002, at Hudson Manor Nursing Home in Secaucus, NJ. He was born March 13, 1955, in New York City to William A. Mitchell and Thelma McIntyre Mitchell. As a young teenager Tony moved with his family to California City in 1970, where he attended and graduated from high school in 1974. Tony attended Desert Haven Regional Training Center for developmental disabled citizens in Lancaster from 1976 to 1994, where he worked on the house cleaning crews, food service staff, the workshop in the production of wind chimes, and assembling of solar panels for Edwards AFB. Tony was selected as a relay torchbearer for the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles and helped to create the "Youth Legacy Kilometers" program. This program helped to raise donations to provide for the Special Olympics and other programs to expand Olympic Sports programs throughout the nation. Tony carried the torch the last half-mile, which traveled through a minimum of 26 cities and hundreds of communities across the country. Tony actively participated in the Special Olympics Games in track, and skiing in the Winter Special Olympic Games, winning silver and bronze medals. He also enjoyed other sports including swimming, horseback riding and bowling. Surviving are his sister, Sandra Lopez of Secaucus, NJ; a brother Keith Mitchell of California; two nephews, Kenneth and Christopher Mitchell of California; niece Aurora Lopez of Secaucus, NJ; aunt, uncle and a host of cousins and friends. His parents William and Thelma Mitchell predeceased him. A memorial mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Secaucus on Thursday, November 21, 2002. Internment will take place at California City Memorial Cemetery, California.
