Edith Houghton
Birth: Feb. 16, 1912
Philadelphia County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Feb. 2, 2013
Sarasota County
Florida, USA

Baseball Pioneer. She was the first, and at her death remained the only, female full-time Major League Baseball (MLB) scout. Raised in Philadelphia as part of a large family, she evidenced her athletic talent early and at 10 was drawing praise as a shortstop for the Philadelphia Bobbies, a team in the Bloomer Girls League. Little Edith toured Japan in 1925, later played for the Hollywood Girls and the New York Bloomer Girls, finished high school, and during World War II joined the Navy. Trained as a Storekeeper (SK), she played baseball on Navy teams then after the conflict remained in the Navy Reserve while working in a Philadelphia hardware store. One day in 1945 she walked into the office of Philadelphia Phillies' president Robert Carpenter's and announced that she wanted to scout for the team. Impressed with her knowledge of the game, and figuring that the chronically bad Phillies had nothing to lose, he hired her as the first solo female MLB scout, though a Mrs. Bessie Largent had teamed with her husband scouting for the Chicago White Sox. Remaining with the Phillies thru 1951, she signed 16 players, though none reached the Majors; recalled to active duty in 1951, she stayed in the Navy until her 1964 retirement as a Chief Storekeeper (SKC). Relocating to South Florida, she lived quietly except for rare interviews about her unique history in baseball and died of the effects of advanced age. Though she long predated the "A League of Their Own" girls, the Baseball Hall of Fame has a display telling her story. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
