Samuel Leo Thurman went by Leo. He was the son of Samuel and Emeline(Lee) Thurman who were born in Kentucky but came as pioneers to Macon County, Missouri, in about 1846.

Samuel Leo was the next to the youngest of 13 children born to his parents. His siblings were:

Sarah Jane Thurman 1839-
Cynthia Ann (Thurman) Atterberry (1840-1940
James Thomas Thurman 1842-1921
John William Thurman 1844-1913
Joseph Lemon Thurman 1846-1869
Columbus Thurman 1848-1886
Lucinda Thurman 1850-1850
Elza Francis Thurman 1852-1938
Harveny Catherine (Thurman) Parr 1854-
Psuffena Thurman 1856-1857
Missouria Emaline Thurman 1857-1863
Mary Alice (Thurman) Bonham 1863-1888

On December 2, 1883, in Macon County, Missouri, Samuel Leo Thurman married Mary E. Roberts. They had one son, Alvy Clyde Thurman, who was born in 1884 while the family was still living in Missouri. Some time after that, they moved to South Dakota. Samuel Leo's older brother Elza Thurman and older sister Cynthia Ann (Thurman) Atteberry also moved there. It is unknown whether they all went at the same time or not.

1900 census of Harding, Butte County, South Dakota:

S. Thurman 38, farmer
Mary Thurman 35, wife
Alvy C. Thurman 15, son
Dee E. Roberts 29, brother-in-law (brother of Mary)
Henry Roberts 32, brother-in-law (brother of Mary)
Jasper Jones 40, servant, farm laborer

The 1900 census confirms that Mary Thurman had only had one child. This census states that Samuel Leo and Mary have been married for 15 years, but they have actually been married for going on 17 years at the time this census was taken.
