Robert Burnett was born west of Licking, Texas Co., MO. He grew up at Burnett Spring, near Licking, Lynch Twp., Texas Co., MO. He attended a country school called Pine Grove, west of Licking, MO in Lynch township. When a young man he went to Kern County California, probably Fellows, CA to work in the oil fields. He was single and later lived with his mother and 2 brothers in Long Beach, CA in the mid 1920's and worked in the oil field there. In the late 1920's or early 1930's he disappeared from his family in California and Licking, MO. His parents and siblings never knew what happened to him. He may have chose to never contact his family. Some of the family thought he might have fell or was pushed from a train. His parents and siblings never lived to learn what happened to him.

World War I Draft Card information: Born Jan 5, 1896, Licking, MO age 21, medium height, blue eyes and brown hair. Resident of Fellows, CA. Oil worker in Fellows, CA. Draft Card was dated June 5, 1917. This is the same date his brother John Henry Burnett, Jr. registered for the service. Correction for the draft card: Draft card has born the year 1896, it should be 1897. 1900 Texas Co., MO Census has his birth year 1897 age 3. Burnett family bible record has his birth year 1897.

The following was found for Robert Burnett. Robert Burnett age 31 born Licking, MO departed to Canada July 5, 1928 on the shipp Coutta. Robert Burnett age 37 returned to the U.S. April 19, 1937 at Sweet Grass, Mont. Information on the document: Robert Burnett born Licking, MO; height 6 feet, complection fair, hair brown, eyes blue, blind in right eye;language-English; race Scotch; occupation well driller; last permanent residence Calgary, Alberta; name and address of friend Hilery H. Head, Black Diamond, Alberta. Destination and name of friend in Montana, Homer Jackson, Shelby, Mont. Medical document lists father John Burnett of Licking, MO. Robert Burnett born at Licking, MO and never lived outside of the U.S.

During World War II in 1942 men between the ages of 42 and 64 had to register for the draft, it was called the "Old Man's Draft." Robert Burnett registered for the draft in 1942.
Although, he was not drafted.

January 2014 Karen Nelson found a memorial on Find A Grave for Robert Burnett born Jan 5, 1897 and died April 26, 1949 and buried in Burney Cemetery, Shasta Co., CA. Karen contacted Patty Hudson the person who posted the memorial. Patty Hudson lives in Burney, CA she took a picture of Robert's tombstone and posted it on Find A Grave. Patty also found Robert Burnett on a California Death Index and the other documents mentioned above.

Patty Hudson mentioned that the VFW probably had the tombstone made for Robert Burnett.

The Burney District Cemetery records show Robert Burnett's birth date 1-5-1897 and death date 4-26-1949, he was a veteran, his last residence was Burney, CA. No known relatives. No known cause of death, but it was a coroner case. No more information about his death. Per email from Shawna to Carole Ragain.

Why would Robert Burnett live at Burney, CA when his family lived in Taft and Long Beach, CA?
