Alexander Clevenger, a son of John Clevenger and Elizabeth Hensley, was born in Cocke County, where he lived his 55 years.

Alexander married Elizabeth "Betsy" Free in the early 1830s. They had 7 or more children. Documentation on members of their family is sketchy.

Alexander's sons, Isaac, Alexander Jr. (Alex), Jackson, David and Archibald "Archer"--not to be confused with Alexander's brother and a couple of nephews also named Archibald--resided just south of Newport in an area west of Pigeon River and on either side of present-day I-40. Two other sons, John McClure "Mack" and James "Jim," lived in the Cave Hill section of Cocke County. Two of Mack's sons, Zebulon "Zeb" and Mack settled near the intersection of (old) Sevierville and Knoxville roads (today's U.S. highways 411 and 70/25W). The area became known as Clevenger Crossroads, and appears today on official maps of Tennessee as "Clevenger." Alexander and Betsy also had a son William for whom the only available data seems to be a death certificate.

Based on the 1850 census that listed a 2 year-old son for Alexander and Betsy named "Doctor," many ancestry databases list Doctor Clevenger as a sibling among the other known Clevenger children. But the 1860 census had no mention of a child by this name or age, which would have been around 12 at the time. It's unclear whether a child died or the 1950 census record or transcription was in error. There seems to be no other data on a "Doctor Clevenger."

1850 census listed Alex (37), Betsy (28), John (14), Issac (12), Alex (11), William (9), James (7), David (4), Doctor (2).

One of Alexander's grandsons, son of Isaac, was Alexander "A.C." Clevenger.

Alexander's brother Jackson raised a family in the Cave Hill section of Cocke County.

Alexander's brother William and wife Mary "Polly" Huff (daughter of pioneer preacher Rev. John Huff and Nancy Allen of Bogard) moved to Missouri and later to Nebraska, where they died. Their son James was born in Cocke Co., died in Missouri. Their daughter Maggie (Margaret) married James William Riggs of Knoxville. Smoky Mountain Ancestral Quest has a family data sheet for William Clevenger.

Two of Alexander's brothers, Aaron and John, moved to Missouri, where they died. But when the 1860 census was taken, John and his family were still in Cocke County. One of Aaron's sons, Jesse, also died in Missouri. One of John's sons, Samuel, born in Cocke County, died in Texas.

Two of Alexander's sisters Sarah and Syche remained in Cocke County. A third sister, Elizabeth, married William Joseph Hightower and moved to Missouri.
